Bali Hai was completely deserted. The locals, having experienced this many times before, had sealed their homes and shops, taken to boat, and left.

In the late afternoon, a rickety old bus carried the Fandomites as far up the right-hand side volcano as they could go. After that, it was only a short hike up an easy, winding trail, then a quick trip over the rope bridge to the peak.

If you follow the winding trail from the beach into the rainforest, you'll find a broad clearing, loud with the cries, cheeps, and twitters of the tropical birdlife. On one of the many beaches is a one-stop-shop for island fun and adventure. The main building, which looks remarkably like a beach hut, only larger, hires out surf equipment and snorkelling gear.
